Yes We Smooth
Some numbers and figures may not match what you find in the Whiskystats 2.0 database.
We added a new functionality to our visualization of historic prices. You can now choose whether or not you want the graphs to be smoothed. So smooth it or not, that is the question!
One of the major characteristics of our price observations is that we have a lot of missing data since not every whisky is traded every month. If, on the other side, a bottle is frequently traded chances are high that the prices vary to some degree. To deal with this price variation within one month we always displayed the average monthly price. Now, we extend this idea and simply average over the averages of the last four months of observations.
At first glance you might think we simply display the four months moving average of the graphs you were used to. This is correct if a whisky was traded every month. But if there a gaps between the price observation we decided to still apply this averaging. Hence, we average over the last four months of observations rather than over four months in general.
In case you don’t like our approach of smoothing the price curves (let us know in the comments), we give you the possibility to switch between the smoothed curve and the old one. For this, you will now see a box with these two options below the graphs. This switch also replaces the “Reset Graph” button. You can now simply switch between the graphs to reset them in case you pinched and zoomed around.
